Production and Elimination of Disruptive Classroom Behavior by Systematically Varying Teacher’s Behavior

Thomas, D.; Becker, W.; Armstrong, M.
Abstract:
This article examines a study on the effect of teacher behaviors on the classroom behaviors of students. The teacher was instructed to use various levels of approving and disapproving actions in response to the student’s behavior. Student behavior was measured in terms of frequency and class of behavior in relation to the varying classes of teacher behavior. The class consisted of 28 students and 10 students were randomly selected each day for observation by trained university students. The results showed approving teacher responses positively reinforced appropriately classroom behavior. With the withdrawal of approving teacher responses disruptive classroom behavior increased. When the teacher demonstrated frequent disapproving responses student disruptive behavior increased, especially in the gross motor and noise-making categories. The results indicated a strong relationship between teacher behavior and producing, maintaining and eliminating disruptive and pro-social classroom behavior.
