The effect of the DISTAR instructional system: An evaluation of the 1971-1972 Title I program of Winthrop, Massachusetts (Report No. PS006218)

Kaufman, M.
Abstract:
This study examined the effect of the DISTAR instructional programs on the academic achievement of elementary students. The DISTAR Reading, Language, and Arithmetic programs were implemented in two first grade and two second grade classrooms. The achievement of first grade students was compared to similar students instructed with the Scott-Foresman (SF) basal reading program. All first grade students were administered the Basic Concept Inventory for pre- and posttest measures. All second grade students were administered the Stanford Achievement Test for pre- and posttest measures. Results indicated that students in one first grade DISTAR classroom made some progress in oral language. In comparison to students in the SF group, first grade DISTAR students demonstrated equivalent gains in IQ and reading achievement at the end of the first grade, but the SF students began the year with higher reading readiness scores. Results for second grade students indicated a significant difference between the arithmetic computation skills of DISTAR and non-DISTAR students, favoring the DISTAR group. Additionally, results indicated second grade DISTAR students were significantly below grade norms on four of the seven achievement subtests.
