Is DI only for low achievers?

Schaefer, E.
Abstract:
This study examined the effect of Reading Mastery (RM) and Spelling Mastery (SM) on the reading and spelling skills of average and above-average fourth and fifth-grade students. Student achievement was compared to similar students within the school who received instruction with Keys to Reading (KR) and Keys to Spelling (KS). A norm-referenced achievement test and the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) were administered for pre- and posttest measures. Results indicate that after one year of instruction, all fourth and fifth grade students were above or well above the national average in reading and spelling. All 28 comparisons of gain scores from the CTBS favored students in the RM and SM groups. Fifth grade students instructed with RM scored significantly higher on the CTBS comprehension subtest than students in the KS group.
