Preventing Failure in the Primary Grades by Siegfried Engelmann, was originally printed in 1969 and republished by the Association for Direct Instruction in 1997. The book is divided into two parts. The first part begins with the rationale behind the development of Direct Instruction (DI) curriculums, and is followed by chapters on teaching techniques and behavior management. Teachers working with any student population will find these chapters to be a useful resource.

The remainder of the book contains in-depth descriptions on how to teach foundational language, reading and math skills. The descriptions are useful for planning instruction for beginning and primary-grade learners and for older students who have not mastered foundational skills. Much of the content of these chapters has been incorporated into published Direct Instruction programs.

Teachers using Direct Instruction programs will find Preventing Failure in the Primary Grades useful and interesting as they learn the rationale underlying the instructional programs they are using. Teachers who are not using DI programs will learn how to develop specific teaching sequences used to teach foundational skills.
