A study of the impact of Direct Instruction on Jefferson County Public Schools' Reading Curriculum

Abstract:
This study compares the effect of two reading programs, Reading Mastery (RM) and the Five Block program, on the reading achievement of elementary students in one school district over four years. Three schools within the district had implemented RM, while the other seven had implemented the Five Block program. The Commonwealth Accountability Testing Scores and the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills were administered for pre- and posttest measures. Results indicate no statistically significant differences between the two groups of students on all of the variables over the four-year period. Multiple statistically significant differences on individual variables were identified between individual schools favoring each of the programs.
