Effects of Corrective Reading on the reading abilities and classroom behaviors of middle school students with reading deficits and challenging behavior

Abstract:
This study examined the effect of Corrective Reading (CR) on the reading fluency and behavior of seven middle school students with reading deficits and behavior problems. The Woodcock Reading Mastery Test-Revised (WRMT-R) was administered for pre- and posttest measures. Reading fluency was monitored before, during, and after the intervention. Seven general education students served as a comparison group during behavioral observations. Results from the WRMT-R indicated that on average, students recorded a significant increase from pre- to posttest scores. Additionally, all students demonstrated increases in oral reading fluency scores. Students demonstrated gains in correct words per minute and a reduction in the mean number of errors. A student survey indicated that most students thought CR helped them read better and that they enjoyed the stories. A teacher survey indicated positive attitudes towards CR and that they felt prepared for implementation and would continue to use the program in the future. The study was unable to establish a relationship between improved oral reading fluency and a reduction of inappropriate behavior. (Copyright © 2011, National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI).
