A comparative study of the effectiveness of DISTAR and eclectic reading methods for inner-city children

This study compared the effect of the DISTAR program and the Eclectic Readiness Program (ERP) on the academic achievement of inner-city low-SES kindergarten students. Sixty four students were instructed with DISTAR Language, DISTAR Reading, and DISTAR Arithmetic and 191 students were instructed with ERP. After ten months of instruction, students were administered the Test of Basic Experience. The results of language and mathematics tests conducted at the conclusion of the study indicated that ERP students demonstrated significantly higher mean language and mathematics readiness scores than DISTAR students.
