Changing reading programs: North Thurston’s gradual move toward Reading Mastery

Woodward, J.
Abstract:
This study examined the effect of Reading Mastery on the reading achievement of 14 fourth grade students over the course of one school year. The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills was administered each year in the spring, and tested students’ vocabulary, comprehension and overall reading skills. Results indicate that on average, students recorded gains above the expected level for 12 months. Student progress was more than two times the average gains from the previous year when they were instructed with the Ginn 720 reading program.
