A study of comparison of two reading programs (Ginn 360 and DISTAR) upon primary inner city students

Grant, E. M.
This study compared the effect of two reading programs, Ginn 360 and DISTAR Reading, on the reading achievement of inner city second grade students. The Metropolitan Reading Readiness Test was administered in kindergarten to match 39 students from DISTAR schools with 39 students from Ginn 360 schools. Students received instruction with their respective programs in the first and second grade. Students were administered the Wisconsin Tests of Reading Skill Development (WTRSD) and the Dale Johnson Word Recognition Test (DJWRT) at the end of the second grade for posttest measures. Results indicate that students in the DISTAR group demonstrated significantly higher mean scores on the WTRSD long vowel subtest and the base words and endings subtest. Results from the DJWRT indicate that students in the DISTAR group demonstrated a significantly higher mean score for vocabulary skills.
