Summer Coaching Academy

The National Institute for Direct Instruction, in cooperation with Roger Bacon Academy, presents Direct Instruction Coaching – An Intensive Summer Academy

Monday, July 6 – Thursday, July 9, 2026
Leland, North Carolina

Lead Trainer: Tara Davis
Intended Audience: Instructional coaches, peer coaches, and others responsible for observing instruction and improving student performance

Join with educators for this exciting Professional Learning opportunity!

In this 4-day event, participants will cover the content of NIFDI’s two coaching academies.

One of the most critical roles in a successful Direct Instruction implementation is the Peer Coach. With good, careful peer coaching, teachers will become more skilled and proficient in teaching the program, and students will excel with improved instruction. In an implementation that does not incorporate high-quality peer coaching, some teachers may become stars, while others may show little to no improvement, ultimately hindering the implementation's overall success.

With effective peer coaching, staff development, and strong leadership, teachers who use Direct Instruction will improve significantly, and students will progress farther and faster than they ever have before.

The first two days will feature Coaching Academy I: Analyzing Data, Classroom Observations, and Providing Feedback, where participants learn how to:

  • Gain meaningful information from lesson progress and mastery data.
  • Model how to improve written records.
  • Conduct 5-minute in-class observations on key structural and teaching components.
  • Conduct longer, more supportive classroom observations that include demonstrations, in-class coaching, and team teaching to increase student success.
  • Provide effective oral and written feedback to instructors that will directly impact student performance.
  • Design and deliver efficient ongoing professional development

Days three and four will cover the content of Coaching Academy II: Enhanced Coaching and Facilitating Professional Development, which covers:

  • Refining observational skills to increase the coach's ability to provide data-driven feedback (e.g., on pacing, student mastery of material, ratio of reinforcement).
  • Determining the appropriate intervention based on data and observation.
  • Communicating with staff in order to increase instructional effectiveness.
  • Design and deliver a rehearsal session in conjunction with an in-service practice session.

The fee for this training is $759, which includes all materials, continental breakfast, and refreshments each day.

Space is limited to 15 participants. Register today!
