History is presented in a uniquely understandable fashion because events are explained in the context of big ideas in history, and organized using the problem-solution-effect format. Historical events are understood as responses to either economic problems or human rights problems. Human responses are categorized as attempts to solve these problems through accommodating, dominating, moving, inventing or tolerating (ADMIT) the problem. Presenting historical information in a carefully organized fashion results in greater student comprehension and retention. Several times in each chapter the key content is captured by test questions requiring an essay answer. Students are provided with scaffolding (graphic organizers and model answers) to assist them in learning the key ideas of the text and how to articulate the answers to the essay questions. In addition the text has excellent and frequent exercises for vocabulary instruction, cumulative review, and extension activities for higher order thinking.

The 2012 edition of Connecting Math Concepts (CMCCE): Comprehensive Edition provides a number of improvements to the previous edition of CMCCE. Most instructional strategies are the same as those of the earlier editions; however, the procedures for teaching these strategies have been greatly modified to address problems in presentation of the content to serve at-risk students more effectively. The 2012 edition of CMCCE has also been revised on the basis of field-testing.

The 2012 edition of CMCCE now includes:

  • More oral work than earlier editions. This work is presented as “hot series” of tasks. The series are designed so that students respond to ten or more related questions or directions per minute; therefore, these series allow the teacher to portray more information about an operation or discrimination in a shorter period of time.

  • Content addressing all standards specified in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. In Levels A and B, students learn the component skills and operations required to provide a solid foundation in topics involving place value and operations, money, geometry, measurement and data and word problems.

    In Levels C and D, students apply these component skills and operations to more complicated computational procedures and problem solving strategies. Levels E and F expand the computational procedures and problem solving strategies to multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios and functions.
  • Technology components and other support/enhancements. These include displays in the Teacher Presentation Books, Workbook and Answer Key pages reduced in the Teacher Presentation Books, a Student Assessment Book with all program assessments in one location, student Practice Software and the ability to plan and review lessons online via ConnectED. This newest edition of CMCCE also comes with a Board Displays CD (also available online) that improves the precision of instruction, the quantity of material that is covered in a single lesson’s time and the communication of content, all while reducing teacher preparation time.

Of particular importance is the correlation of CMCCE to the Common Core Standards. Implementing Direct Instruction Successfully

When implemented fully, Direct Instruction (DI) is unparalleled in its ability to improve student performance and enhance students’ self-esteem. In order to implement DI effectively, much more is required than simply purchasing instructional materials. The following two-part tutorial guides administrators, teachers, and coaches through the key features of a successful DI implementation. Part I provides an overview of the steps schools need to take in preparation for a DI implementation before school starts, while Part II provides an overview of the steps schools need to take after school has started.

IMPORTANT: This tutorial is an intensive video series comprised of 18 segments, each followed by a series of questions. Users should allow approximately three hours to watch the videos and complete the questions. NIFDI recognizes the high demand for time placed on school officials and, for this reason, has structured the tutorial so users may stop at any time and later resume where they left off.
