Reading Mastery is a complete basal reading program that uses the Direct Instruction method to help students master essential decoding and comprehension skills. The program places particular emphasis on teaching thinking skills and helping students acquire background knowledge. Program materials include fully scripted lessons to guide teachers through carefully constructed instructional steps - modeling new content, providing guided practice, offering individualized practice, and applying skills. It also utilizes a special orthography designed to assist students identify letter sounds. The special font is later phased out and replaced with traditional orthography. Signals and group responses are used to keep students involved, help them stay on task, and help with lesson pacing. Teachers assess student performance throughout the program, and struggling students receive practice through remedial exercises. Each level of the program typically spans one academic year. A typical 30- to 45-minute lesson includes seven to nine short activities encompassing multiple strands of content, including:

Reading Mastery and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

In recent years, the Common Core State Standards have become a universal language for schools across our nation and play a significant role in instructional decisions made in schools, including curriculum selections. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed with the intent to provide a clear framework of what students are expected to learn and to ensure consistent standards, regardless of where students attend school. An evaluation of Reading Mastery Signature Edition has been conducted by the publisher of Reading Mastery, McGraw-Hill, to determine the alignment of the program’s content with the English Language Arts common core standards. Overall, RMSE met 95% of the ELA Standards prescribed in the CCSS. Read more about the alignment of Direct Instruction to the Common Core State Standards.

Handwriting Supplement to RMSE

The Sentence Copying Program, developed at the National Institute for Direct Instruction, is a supplemental handwriting program to accompany the Reading Mastery Signature Edition program. The sentence copying sheets correlate with Reading Mastery’s sequence of skill development but do not employ its orthography. Instead, they provide handwriting practice of letter forms more commonly taught in typical elementary classrooms. This supplemental program is available for levels K and 1 of RMSE. Academic Core is a highly structured four-level program (A through D) developed by the National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI) to teach students important science facts and information. The program ensures mastery of sophisticated information and includes a built-in reward system to motivate and reinforce students. Measurement, time, the solar system, rocks, body systems, and United States geography are just a few of the units included. It is intended for students in grades 2 and above. Each lesson is designed to be presented to the entire class but can also be presented to small groups and should take approximately 20 minutes to teach.

Academic Core is primarily a verbal program directed by the teacher. The teacher presents lessons from a script, and students respond verbally. Once brought to verbal mastery, students respond to questions in writing. Many units include reference charts, maps, or displays. This material is available as a free PDF download. Most units stand alone; however, some units depend upon information from earlier ones. This overlap of information requires the teacher to either follow the exact sequence of each level or to make sure the students know the prerequisite information. The program includes evaluation material to ensure students have mastered the material and rewards for students as they progress through the program.

Implementing Direct Instruction Successfully

When implemented fully, Direct Instruction (DI) is unparalleled in its ability to improve student performance and enhance students’ self-esteem. In order to implement DI effectively, much more is required than simply purchasing instructional materials. The following two-part tutorial guides administrators, teachers, and coaches through the key features of a successful DI implementation. Part I provides an overview of the steps schools need to take in preparation for a DI implementation before school starts, while Part II provides an overview of the steps schools need to take after school has started.

IMPORTANT: This tutorial is an intensive video series comprised of 18 segments, each followed by a series of questions. Users should allow approximately three hours to watch the videos and complete the questions. NIFDI recognizes the high demand for time placed on school officials and, for this reason, has structured the tutorial so users may stop at any time and later resume where they left off.
