The DISTAR Arithmetic programs teach the fundamental skills and concepts of math that are critical for students’ success later in school. Level I is typically used with Kindergarten students but is also effective for high-performing preschool through low-performing grade 2 students. Level II is usually for first graders but is effective for students through grade 3. All skills and concepts are presented to small groups in a fast paced, motivating lesson format and are continuously integrated into more sophisticated review and application exercises. Lessons are designed around major skill tracks. Strategies and concepts are linked from one lesson to the next, and everything taught is continuously integrated and practiced in increasingly complex applications.

The focus of Level I is basic addition and subtraction operations. Students master rote, rational, and ordinal counting, algebra operations, concepts of more and less, and simple picture and story problems. In Level II, students practice extensions of what they mastered in Level I, learn to solve column addition problems (with regrouping), and work with multiplication and fractions.

Corrective Mathematics is a remedial system that solves a wide range of problems for struggling older students, even if they have failed with other approaches. Explicit, step-by-step lessons are grouped into separate modules that may be taught separately or concurrently to customize instruction for particular student needs. The program contains modules for addition; subtraction; multiplication; division; basic fractions; fractions, decimals, percents; and ratios and equations. Upon completion of one or more of the modules, students are armed with the basic strategies they need to access conventional math instruction with success.

Corrective Mathematics is typically needed by older students whose math performance is characterized by a weak grasp of the basics, lack of facility with math facts, inaccurate computation, and a lack of strategies for problem solving. The program is effective for students with poor attention and poor recall of directions or others who meet criteria to receive special services. With a high success rate, frequent teacher feedback, and built-in opportunities to earn reinforcement throughout each lesson, even students with histories of failure remain motivated and on task as they master fundamental math concepts and skills.

Connecting Math Concepts: Comprehensive Edition is a six-level program (Levels A-F) designed to accelerate the math learning performance of students in grades K through 5. The program provides highly explicit and systematic instruction in the wide range of content specified in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The program stresses understanding and introduces concepts carefully, then weaves them together throughout the program. Lessons are designed to introduce concepts at a reasonable rate and help students make connections between important concepts. The lessons provide the practice needed to achieve mastery and understanding. Levels A through F are suitable for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The series is also highly effective with at-risk students. Specific strategies are taught for all content.

Direct Instruction and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

In recent years, the Common Core State Standards have become a universal language for schools across our nation and play a significant role in instructional decisions made in schools, including curriculum selections. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed with the intent to provide a clear framework of what students are expected to learn and to ensure consistent standards, regardless of where students attend school. An evaluation of Connecting Math Concepts: Comprehensive Edition has been conducted by the publisher, McGraw-Hill, to demonstrate the alignment of the program’s content with the Mathematics common core standards. Connecting Math Concepts: Comprehensive Edition has a 100% alignment to the CCSS. Read more about the alignment of Direct Instruction to the Common Core State Standards.

Engelmann and colleagues developed four major mathematics programs: DISTAR, Corrective Mathematics, Connecting Math Concepts and Essentials for Algebra. These cover math content ranging from Kindergarten to Algebra I. The newest version of Connecting Math Concepts is 100% aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

The more recently published Funnix Beginning Math is computer based.

Implementing Direct Instruction Successfully

When implemented fully, Direct Instruction (DI) is unparalleled in its ability to improve student performance and enhance students’ self-esteem. In order to implement DI effectively, much more is required than simply purchasing instructional materials. The following two-part tutorial guides administrators, teachers, and coaches through the key features of a successful DI implementation. Part I provides an overview of the steps schools need to take in preparation for a DI implementation before school starts, while Part II provides an overview of the steps schools need to take after school has started.

IMPORTANT: This tutorial is an intensive video series comprised of 18 segments, each followed by a series of questions. Users should allow approximately three hours to watch the videos and complete the questions. NIFDI recognizes the high demand for time placed on school officials and, for this reason, has structured the tutorial so users may stop at any time and later resume where they left off.
